GUITAR TUITION IN NORWICH

I’m Dave Malkin, a professional guitarist, composer and guitar teacher based in Norwich. With more than a decade of experience as a teacher and performer, I offer classical and plectrum guitar tuition in Norwich for students of all ages and abilities. My ambition is to provide an inspiring and supportive environment for students to master the instrument, not just the notes on the page, helping them to develop confidence and independence as musicians.

I began studying the classical guitar with Mark Ashford before being offered a place at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where I continued my training under internationally renowned guitarist Graham Devine. Since graduating I have worked extensively in music for television and film, contributing to soundtracks for numerous productions as well as performing alongside John Dipper and his 14-string viola d’amore as one half of Dipper Malkin. Our debut album was included in The Sunday Times “100 Best Albums of 2017”. I have taught on behalf of Aldeburgh Young Musicians, Guildhall Young Artists and The Glasshouse, and for more than a decade at St. Dunstan’s College, a progressive, award-winning school in South East London.

Why the classical guitar?

The classical guitar is rooted in centuries of musical tradition, and studying it provides a uniquely comprehensive foundation for any guitarist. My own experience has been that the tools I acquired through classical training – technique, tone production, understanding notation, aural skills – have all been transferable and invaluable in shaping my playing as a plectrum and electric guitarist.

Who can learn?

Anyone can learn to play the guitar! I’ve taught students from age six to sixty, from absolute beginners to advanced players – we’ll find the right level and pace for you.

Do you prepare students for grades?

Yes, I have extensive experience of preparing students for both Trinity College London and ABRSM examinations. While working through a graded syllabus is not compulsory, it can provide a useful structure, clear goals and a sense of progress. My priority is for students to develop an enriched relationship with music, regardless of the route they choose.

Do I need my own instrument?

Yes, but quality student instruments are actually reasonably affordable. I’m always happy to recommend suitable instruments for different budgets before you make a purchase.

How much do lessons cost?

My rates are based on the guidelines set by The Musician’s Union.

– 45 minutes – £35

– 60 minutes – £45.50

Testimonials

“Our 9 year old son has been learning to play with Dave since last November. It has been fantastic to have such a knowledgeable and accomplished musician with so much industry and teaching experience enable him to develop so swiftly. Deeply appreciative of Dave’s capacity to have Stanley leave a lesson with a big smile on his face buzzing with the joys of progress. A great teacher!”

“Dave is an excellent tutor. He taught my older child from Grade 1 through to Grade 8, with all exams being awarded Distinction. He is now teaching my younger son, having worked with him since Grade 1 and currently preparing him for Grade 7, with all exams to date also awarded Distinction. Dave’s guidance and support played a significant role in my younger son being awarded a music scholarship at school.
His consistent approach, expertise, and ability to tailor his teaching to each student’s needs have contributed hugely to their progress, and examination success.”
